2025 Fritz Kutter Prize awarded to Samuel Corecco for the MSc thesis in AI applied to solar data

Samuel Corecco, Master in Artificial Intelligence graduate from the USI Faculty of Informatics, is the winner of the 2025 Fritz Kutter Prize (ETHZ). Corecco’s thesis “Using Artificial Intelligence for retrieving physical parameters of solar plasma from spectropolarimetric lines” was carried out at IRSOL under the supervision of Prof. Svetlana Berdyugina. The award was presented by the Fritz Kutter Fund in a ceremony held on 24 November 2025. A new sequential process based on AI developed in the thesis revolutionises the way we process solar data and offers a perfect blend of speed, accuracy and physical information.

The SSAA Edith Alice Müller Award 2025 goes to Dr. Andrea Francesco Battaglia

Dr. Andrea Francesco Battaglia has been awarded the Edith Alice Müller Award 2025 by the Swiss Society of Astronomy and Astrophysics (SSAA) for his PhD work on solar flares observed with the Swiss-led ESA Solar Orbiter instrument STIX. The thesis work was carried out at ETHZ and FHNW. Andrea is now a postdoc at IRSOL and continues his studies of flares through optical spectropolarimetric observations with ZIMPOL coordinated with STIX measurements. Find details at this link.
